Intermediate Bachata - 4 Selected Figures

I picked these 4 figures because I had seen them a lot in dance clubs.

1. Three Open Forward and Back Walks With Tap

Start and End in Closed Position. (Note: This figure can be done also in Open Position.)

Man
1. Forward LF, big step                                 1
2. Forward RF, past LF, big step                        2
3. Forward LF, past RF, big step                        3
4. Tap RF, closing up to LF, smaller step, with         4
   R hip lift
5. Back RF, big step                                    5
6. Back LF, past RF , big step                          6
7. Back RF, big step                                    7
8. Tap LF, closing up to RF, smaller step, with         8
   L hip lift

Lady
1. Back RF, big step                                    1
2. Back LF, past RF , big step                          2
3. Back RF, big step                                    3
4. Tap LF, closing up to RF, smaller step, with         4
   L hip lift
5. Forward LF, big step                                 5
6. Forward RF, past LF, big step                        6
7. Forward LF, past RF, big step                        7
8. Tap RF, closing up to LF, smaller step, with         8
   R hip lift

For a crowded floor, do steps 1-3 and 5-7 the same way but with much smaller steps.

2. Side Basic With Ouick Pivot Turn to R

Start and End In Closed Position.

Man
1. Side LF                                                1
2. Close RF to LF                                         2
3. Side LF                                                3
4. Tap RF, closing it up to LF with hip lift on R hip     4
5. Side RF, starting to pivot to R                        5
6. Side LF, continuing to pivot to R                      6
7. Side RF, continuing to pivot to R                      7
8. Tap LF, closing it up to RF, with hip lift on L hip    8

Lady
1. Side RF                                                1
2. Close LF to RF                                         2

The amount of pivot turn, of course, depends on the type of shoes the dancers wear. If the shoes have smooth soles, you can do up to 1 1/2 turns or 2 turns to the R. If the shoes have non-slip soles (e.g., most booths), best to do only 1/2 turn the R, because any more amount of turn can cause trouble. Note also that these turns in place.

I AM A CHA-CHA-CHERO--A New Cha-Cha Song

CORO DE FONDO (Background Chorus)

I am a cha-cha-chero......

Yes, I am a...cha-cha-chero.

I am a cha-cha-chero.....

Yes, I am a....cha-cha-chero.

SONERO (Lead salsa solo singer)

I am a cha-cha-chero,

'cause I'm a dancer who's so "sincero"...

And I do cha-cha-cha todo el día....

And it is so so so nice to see ya!

Guaracho or guajiro

Does not matter too much to me now...

It is the cha-cha-cha that so loves me..

This is the music that moves me like a plow.....

CORO DE FONDO

I am a cha-cha-chero....

Yes, I am a cha-cha-chero.

SONERO

I am called the Little Lily of Salsa, though cha-cha-cha is a salsa that's slow...

CORO DE FONDO

I am a cha-cha-chero....

Yes, I am a cha-cha-chero.

SONERO

It is life inside the music and all else...that makes the cha-cha above and below.

CORO DE FONDO

I am a cha-cha-chero....

Yes, I am a cha-cha-chero.

SONERO

O, that dancin', dancin', dancin', I'm doing is like the mambo that is comin' back.

CORO DE FONDO

I am a cha-cha-chero....

Yes, I am a cha-cha-chero....

SONERO

Look at me, a look at me in this baile...this Latin dance never hits the sack!

CORO DE FONDO

I am a cha-cha-chero....

Yes, I am a cha-cha-chero....

I am cha-cha-chero....

An Introduction to Bachata - Four Important Basic Figures

A. STEPS IN PLACE WITH HIP LIFT

Start and end in either Closed Position or Open Position.

This figure often will start most bachata dances. But this is often good for crowded dance floors because it involves no travelling movement.

3. Step LF in place                                   3
4. Tap RF in place, with R hip lift                   4
5. Step RF in place                                   5

Often, although this move have the same steps as in the previous (Steps in Place With Hip Lift) bachateros will want to do a slow turn (or rotation) to relieve boredom of just simply stepping in place.

3. Step LF in place                                   3

5. Step RF in place                                   5
